Dear Senator  (add your Senator’s name),

My name is (your name here). I am writing to ask for your support of legislation that is being brought before the Transportation Committee by Senator Grendell to establish an equine specialty license plate for the State of Ohio. The funds generated by this license plate would be dispensed by grants to organizations that preserve and expand public bridal trails in the state, to therapeutic riding centers and to groups that promote education and public awareness programs.

The State of Ohio is ranked as having the 6th largest equine population in the United States. We also have some of the finest bridal trails accessible to the public of any of the surrounding states.  By providing funding for the upkeep and expansion of these trails, we will continue to draw equestrians from Ohio and surrounding states to utilize our bridal trails. This has a tremendous economic impact on Ohio from the purchase and upkeep of trailers, fuel purchases, feed and grain purchases etc. The money dispensed will be funneled directly back to the community in goods and services purchased.

We have many therapeutic riding centers that provide an extraordinary service to both children and adults in Ohio. They operate on tight budgets and any additional funding will allow them to expand their services. Again, the money dispensed will be directly funneled back into the community in goods and services purchased.

Due to our large equine population, we expect that the demand for these specialty plates will be strong.  Ten dollars of each purchase will go directly back to the State of Ohio. The State can not lose.

Horsepower Ohio is a non profit, grass roots organization that was established in January, 2006 to bring forth this concept of a specialty equine license plate to the equine community. With a board of 4 people, tremendous enthusiasm and hard work, Horse Power Ohio in 6 months was able to gather greater than 1200 signatures from people who are interested in purchasing this plate. It has the support of the Ohio Horseman’s Council (approx. 3500 members) and the therapeutic riding centers in the state.

Thank you for taking time to consider this legislation. I hope that we can count on you to support Senator Grendell in his efforts to pass this bill, either by co- sponsoring it or voting for its passage. You can see more information on our web site www.horsepowerohio.org.  I look forward to hearing from you.
